Poker Tournament Strategy
Before we discuss tournament strategy, let’s see why you should play online poker tournaments to begin with. First of all, you get much more fun for your dollar than in cash games. Tournament chips do not represent real money, therefore, you will not pay rake on every single hand that you play. You only pay a one time tournament fee, and regardless of how long you play in the tourney, it won’t cost you anything more in terms of real money.
All this doesn’t just mean that you’ll be able to play more hands for the same money, it also means you’ll get a much better EV on your investment. Sign up for a rakeback deal, and you’ll even get back some of the tourney fees that you pay.
The next thing you have to decide is whether to play in STTs (Single Table Tournaments) or MTTs (Multi-Table Tournaments). This decision should be made with the size of your bankroll in sight. MTTs offer a much better potential return on your buy-in than STTs. If you make it deep into the money in a MTT, you’re practically guaranteed that you’ll get about 10 or even 100 times the equivalent of your buy-in. The problem with MTTs is, that they feature a bigger variance, that is, the odds of you reaching deep into the money in a MTT are much smaller than winning a STT. Good poker players win about one in 40 MTTs they play, and even though that one win more than makes up for the previous losses or low cashes, it takes a serious bankroll to survive a 39-session drought. If you do have a generous bankroll, by all means, do play in MTTs, (especially high buy-in ones) because you can make some truly serious money there.
In case you’re building a bankroll from scratch, or you’re low on cash and make a small deposit, playing in MTTs is almost a sure way to wreck your feeble stack. In that case, you need to play in STTs. A STT will give you a smaller return on your buy-in (if you make it to the last money position, you’ll only double your buy-in up in a standard SNG) but the odds of actually making it to the money in STTs are much bigger. If you’re a good player, you might end up in the money more than 50% of the time. Some poker rooms even offer special STTs for beginners in which 50% of the players are rewarded. While the return in these STTs is quite abysmal, they are great for initial bankroll building. If you’re a good heads-up player, taking part in heads-up STTs is another great way to build or to rebuild your bankroll. You’ll double your buy-in up for every win, and if you are a good heads-up player, you will win more than 50% of games you play.
Here is another point to pay attention to. A buy-in. Sounds new? Go to the poker tournament definitions page to turn all the obscure to the clear. The buy-in can be $25.000. Equal to knight's wages? If you have such a sum on your account, you can easily become a player of the world poker tour. Try your luck, who knows, maybe you will be successful enough to become the winner?! If you need something easier but not less exciting, you can always try Slots Vegas, bingo and other games.
